It is possible to purchase shorter rail lengths.
They will be an inch longer than you need, to allow for a proper fit.

The diagram pictured shows the profile of all three rail part, and recommended specifications.
The photo of the finished stairway is one I built using my cedar baluster and rail products.
This 8 ft. rail section is designed to hold 17 of my 5.5" wide balusters.
For the balusters to be held in place with the spline there should be no or little space
between each baluster.
Typically they are placed directly next to each other.
This creates a second repeating pattern.
If you have your own balusters and want space between them, you will need
to secure them into the rails another way.
Check with a local carpenter for suggestions on other options.
