A spectacular Gui 簋 shaped bronze ritual furnace, of a bulbous body tapered into a swelling round paunch, above a raised circular base containing a rectangular seal marked 珍玩 “Zhenwan”, a well-known “treasure” mark since the 13th century Ming period. With a pair of seamless modeled elephant heads and curved trunks that served as side handles, the censer bears a smooth, copper red patina with sporadic natural malachite. Weighs nearly five pounds, the bronze censer is a hefty cast of rare perfections. Along with its excellent condition, the censer is attributed to the official kiln of the 18th century Kangxi (康熙) period.
