    Description

Antique Official Panama Souvenir for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, 1915.
Isthmian Canal Commission, piece number 72495.
    A Life For Each Tie.
This is a piece of one of the wood ties made from the Lignum Vitae tree used in the Panama Railroad. These ties were made into souvenirs to commemorate the building of the Panama canal and to honor the lives lost in the horrible conditions encountered while building the railroad previous to the canal.
This piece has a numbered metal tag attached, the envelope on the back complete with informational paper and import document "copy" which is on thin paper like tracing paper (note there are no "instructions on reverse side").
The envelope and papers are fragile due to their age. The ribbon is likely original and is worn/aged. The finish on the wood has some imperfect areas, see photos (not sure if something got on it at some point, or if it was like that when it was made). Lettering is worn in places. Note that the lower left edge of wood is warped toward front.
This piece is approximately 7 3/4 inches across, 4 3/4 inches tall, wood is 7/16 inch thick.
Expect it to look, smell, and perform like the antique item that it is.
