Today we are happy to offer for sale a rare antique South African Railways bronze locomotive number plaque. The Netherlands–South African Railway Company (Nederlandsche Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij; Nederlands-Suid-Afrikaanse Spoorwegmaatskappy) or NZASM (also sometimes called SASM in South Africa) was a railway company established in 1887. The company was based in Amsterdam and Pretoria, and operated in the South African Republic (ZAR) during the late 19th century. At the request of ZAR president Paul Kruger, the NZASM constructed a railway line between Pretoria and Lourenço Marques in Portuguese East Africa (now Maputo in Mozambique). The company, defunct in 1908, was succeed by the Central South African Railways. This large and heavy (over 20 lbs) plaque is nicely crafted and detailed. The piece, crafted of solid bronze, is oval-shaped with raised text in outer frame that reads "Suid-Afrikaanse Spoorwee/South African Railways", the center features the number E1437 6EI. The background of the sign is cold-painted with bright red paint. The large identification sign was used on the side of a locomotive train. Plaque presents well and is in very good antique condition, with minor wear, oxidation, tarnish and patina commensurate with age. There is minor expected loss to painted finish. This is a great opportunity to acquire a rare sign from a pioneering train line, which will make a truly wonderful addition to any railroadiana collection...Fresh to the market!
