Antique Barometer Thermometer Humidity Instrument Cattelli, England 1840

Description

By far, the nicest stick barometer/thermometer/humidity instrument we've ever carried. It still performs all of its function as well as it did 180 years ago and is indisputably beautiful, in rich, warm mahogany that the English did so well. Made by D. Cattelli & Son of Hereford England.  It features a hardwood wheel design with an 8" silvered barometer dial finely engraved, encased in a cast bezel covered with a convex glass, a silvered Thermometer scale with a red alcohol tube. The makers name is recorded in the Barometer Makers book by Edwin Banfield at 1815-45. Below the barometer dial is an ivory knob for positioning the brass hand for earlier readings. At the bottom is a spirit level engraved with the makers name.
On the back side there is a narrow hinged door that open onto the working components.
It measures 38" tall and 14" at the widest point.
It is extremely difficult to find fragile scientific instruments of this age that are still functional and why we're pleased to find this one.
We saw an almost identical one for sale in England for 1500 pounds, so our 00 price is a comparative bargain!
Shipping fragile items like this is always problematic. Barometer are especially so.  They are best kept in a vertical position (upright) at all times to keep the mercury functioning. This is very difficult to control when shipping so we would would feel safer if the buyer would pick it up here in Lynchburg and took it home in an upright position.
